Netherlands missed Makaay in game against Italy

Italy beated the Netherlands 3 - 1 thanks to a great performance of Alessandro Del Piero. The orange team missed Roy Makaay, who didn't take part of this game.

This is the Netherlands' first defeat since losing to hosts Portugal in the Euro 2004 semi-finals and allowed a bright start in which they took a 38th minute lead through winger Ryan Babel.

Gilardino equalized two minutes later when he eluded Netherlands defender Ron Vlaar and scored on a cross by Alessandro Del Piero.

The 20-year-old Vlaar then headed in an own goal from a corner by Del Piero in first-half injury time.

Toni netted in the 50th when he dribbled past Vlaar before finishing from close range.
