Kings of the German Cup
Bayern Munich got the title of the German Cup on Saturday. They defeated Eintracht Frankfurt with Claudio Pizarro's goal. The Peruvian striker headed home the winner off Willy Sagnol's corner kick in an unconvincing Munich performance that drew plenty of jeers from the crowd of 63,000 at Olympic Stadium.
In fact, Munich were not assured of victory until goalkeeper and captain Oliver Kahn made a superb save against Ioannis Amanatidis with three minutes left.
Roy Makaay's team won the German cup for the third time in four years and for the 13th time overall. And it's important to say that Kahn is the first German player to lift the cup trophy five times.
As we know, Bayern hold a four-point Bundesliga lead over SV Hamburg and can clinch an unprecedented second straight league and cup double next week Wednesday if they win over VfB Stuttgart and Hamburg don't win at lowly Cologne the previous day.
Midfielder Hasan Salihamidzic said: 'We didn't play well, to be honest. But we won another title and can now clinch the league on Wednesday.'
About the match, we can say that Roy Makaay wasted an early chance for Munich. Frankfurt bounced back with Amanatidis aiming inches wide in the 27th and Benjamin Koehler denied by Kahn seconds later.
Makaay was off target again in the 43rd but the last opportunity of the half belonged to Frankfurt with Alexander Meier failing to control the ball properly alone in front of Kahn.
Bayern stepped up the pace after the break and were unlucky when Makaay's volley was deflected against the crossbar by Nikolov.
Munich finally scored the winner in the 59th when Sagnol's accurate corner from the right found Pizarro, who headed home from 10 metres out at the far left post.
Frankfurt called for a penalty when Koehler fell in the fight for the ball against Sagnol in the 64th, with their coach Friedhelm Funkel ordered into the stands for his loud protests.
Kahn's great save in the closing stages then showed Frankfurt that it was not to be their day. However, their defeat was sweetened by a UEFA Cup berth as runners-up as Munich are already assured of playing in the Champions League next season.
